A rotary screen is a specialized wastewater‑treatment device capable of continuously and automatically intercepting and removing debris of various shapes from flowing fluids. It finds extensive application in municipal wastewater treatment, the potable water industry, and power‑plant intake structures, and can also serve as a preliminary screening unit in effluent‑treatment processes for industries such as textiles, food processing, papermaking, and leather manufacturing. As one of China’s solid–liquid separation devices, it fills a domestic gap in this field.
Working principle
A rotary mechanical screen is a type of screening device capable of continuous, automated removal of solids. It consists of numerous identical rake‑tooth elements arranged in alternating, parallel rows to form a closed rake‑tooth chain. Driven by an electric motor and a reducer, the system operates via a set of sprockets and a conveyor chain, generating a continuous, top‑to‑bottom cyclical motion that continuously clears debris from the screen. As the rake‑tooth chain moves to the upper and rear sections of the equipment, the guiding action of the sprockets and curved guide rails causes the parallel rows of rake teeth to stagger, allowing solid contaminants to fall under gravity into the debris collection trough. If not fully dislodged, this type of screen can easily carry residual debris into the downstream channel.
During operation, the wire‑rope‑driven drum mechanism releases the rope, causing the rake bucket to descend along the guide rails from its highest position (the end of the previous cycle’s skimming). Under the action of gravity, the skimming plate lowers with the bucket. Once the skimming plate returns to its original position, the bucket, driven by the opening/closing device (an electric push rod), opens via the tension of the intermediate wire rope and continues its downward travel until it reaches the lower limit of the channel. After the rake teeth have engaged the gaps in the screen, the wire‑rope drive retracts the rope, further forcing the bucket to close completely. The bucket and its carriage then ascend along the guide rails, removing screen debris until they come into contact with the skimming plate; under the relative motion between the two, the debris is skimmed off, guided by the debris‑deflection plate into the debris collection trough, thus completing one working cycle.
Performance Advantages
The rotary mechanical screen’s greatest advantages are its high degree of automation, excellent separation efficiency, low power consumption, quiet operation, and superior corrosion resistance. It can ensure continuous, stable operation even without on-site supervision, and is equipped with an overload safety protection device that automatically shuts down the equipment in the event of a malfunction, thereby preventing overloading.
This equipment allows users to freely adjust the operating intervals to achieve periodic operation; it can also be automatically controlled based on the liquid level difference between the upstream and downstream sides of the screen. Additionally, it features manual control for convenient maintenance. Users can select the appropriate configuration according to their specific operational requirements. Thanks to its well‑designed structure, the equipment exhibits strong self‑cleaning capabilities during operation, preventing clogging and minimizing routine maintenance needs.
Function
Rotary mechanical screens can effectively remove solid materials, significantly reduce suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in water, and alleviate the treatment load on downstream processes. They are also employed in industrial applications for solid–liquid separation and the recovery of valuable substances.
Scope of Application
1. Used in the treatment of industrial wastewater from papermaking, slaughterhouse operations, leather processing, sugar refining, brewing, food processing, textiles, printing and dyeing, petrochemicals, and other industries to remove suspended solids, floating materials, and settleable particulates.
2. Used in industries such as papermaking, alcohol production, starch processing, and food processing to recover valuable materials like fibers and residues.
3. Used in municipal wastewater treatment as a substitute for the primary sedimentation tank.
