  • Product Overview

The Ultra Pure Water EDI Device is a novel desalination process that combines electrodialysis and ion exchange. Abbreviated as EDI, this process leverages the strengths of both technologies while mitigating their respective weaknesses: it uses ion exchange’s ability to achieve deep desalination to overcome electrodialysis’s issue of incomplete desalination due to polarization, and it employs electrodialysis’s polarization‑induced water dissociation to generate H⁺ and OH⁻, enabling the resin to self‑regenerate and thus addressing the drawback of resin deactivation. Additionally, it incorporates selective ion-exchange membranes to accelerate ion migration and removal, thereby achieving the goal of water purification.

    Application areas

① Power Plant Chemical Water Treatment

② Ultrapure water for the electronics, semiconductor, and precision machinery industries

③ Process water for the pharmaceutical industry

④ Preparation of food, beverages, and drinking water

⑤ Desalination of seawater and brackish water

⑥ Small-scale purified water stations, group drinking purified water

⑦ Water for fine chemicals and cutting-edge disciplines

⑧ Preparation of high-purity water required by other industries

    Process Principle

EDI technology seamlessly integrates electrodialysis with ion-exchange processes. When freshwater enters the product‑water compartment, ions in the water undergo ion exchange with the ion-exchange resin and are removed from the solution. The exchanged ions, driven by electrokinetic forces, migrate: cations pass through the cation-exchange membrane toward the cathode, while anions traverse the anion-exchange membrane toward the anode, entering the concentrate‑water compartment and thereby being eliminated from the freshwater stream. Once in the concentrate‑water compartment, cations—unable to cross the anion-exchange membrane—are retained there, and similarly, anions—unable to pass through the cation-exchange membrane—are also trapped in the concentrate‑water compartment. Consequently, both cations and anions are carried away with the concentrate stream, continuously removing ions from the freshwater and progressively increasing its purity. Meanwhile, under the influence of the electric field, water molecules are continually dissociated into H⁺ and OH⁻ ions. + and OH - , H + and OH - They will respectively enable the continuous regeneration of the consumed cation/anion exchange resins. The oxidation reaction at the anode generates O. 2 ,Cl 2 , the reduction reaction at the cathode produces H 2。

    Product Features

    • It occupies a small footprint and eliminates the need for mixed-bed units and regeneration systems.
    • The produced water is continuously stable, with high-quality effluent that can reach up to 18 MΩ·cm, meeting the specifications for ultrapure water.
    • Low operating costs, no acid–base regeneration required, and reduced material expenses.
    • The operating costs of EDI consist solely of electricity and water consumption, eliminating expenses associated with acid and alkali consumption, regeneration water use, wastewater treatment, and effluent discharge.
    • In terms of water consumption, the concentrate from the EDI system can be directly returned to the upstream treatment stage, thereby conserving water resources.
    • The environmental benefits are significant, and operational safety has been enhanced.
