A mechanical filter, also known as a pressure filter, is an important component of the pre‑treatment stage in water purification systems. It features low filtration resistance and high flow capacity. It is primarily used for drinking water purification, as well as pre‑treatment for ion exchange and reverse osmosis systems. It can also be applied in various industrial processes including electric power, petroleum, electronics, beverages, municipal water supply, chemical, metallurgy, textile, papermaking, food, swimming pools, and municipal engineering – covering process water, domestic water, circulating water, and advanced wastewater treatment.
Depending on the filtration media used, mechanical filters can be classified as multi‑media filters, quartz sand filters, activated carbon filters, iron and manganese removal filters, fluoride removal filters, and others.
Mechanical filters are widely used due to their non‑polluting nature, low cost, and economical operation.
Application Fields
① Suitable for water treatment plants and centralized water supply stations in rural towns, industrial and mining enterprises that use surface water or groundwater with relatively low turbidity as their water source.
② Used for side‑stream filtration of industrial circulating cooling water in petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, electric power, oil refining, light industry, textile, and other sectors.
③ Used for surface water purification and removal of iron and manganese from groundwater.
④ Used as pre‑treatment for softening and demineralization processes.
⑤ Used for filtration treatment in municipal and township water treatment plants.
⑥ Used for purification of swimming pools, fountains, and water features.
⑦ Used for removing suspended solids from industrial wastewater, and for subsequent filtration after biological treatment and secondary sedimentation.
⑧ Used as a side‑stream filtration unit for circulating water systems.
Process Principle
The mechanical filter primarily removes contaminants through media filtration and adsorption. When the filter media becomes clogged with excessive impurities, the backwashing mechanism is activated to clean the media. Backwashing uses reverse water flow and may also be combined with compressed air for air‑water scrubbing, which loosens the media bed and dislodges trapped particles adhered to the media surface, carrying them away with the backwash water. This process removes sediment and suspended solids from the media bed, prevents media compaction, and restores the filter's contaminant‑removal capacity.
