Product Overview
The activated carbon filter is a commonly used water treatment device that utilizes activated carbon media as a filtration bed to adsorb and remove color, odor, colloids, pigments, heavy metal ions, and other impurities from water. It also has a certain capability to reduce COD.
Principle Overview

Activated carbon is currently the most widely used active adsorbent. It has a unique porous structure with various shapes of fine pores within its lattice, providing an enormous surface area for adsorption, which gives it a strong adsorption capacity. The activated carbon filter uses adsorption filtration to effectively remove organic matter, colloids, heavy metals, residual chlorine, and other undesirable impurities, while also reducing water color. It is widely used in water purification for factories and towns, as well as in pre‑treatment stages for reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and ion exchange systems, improving the influent quality for various deep purification devices.
Activated carbon is produced from raw materials such as coal, charcoal, fruit pits, and nutshells through carbonization and activation, resulting in a large specific surface area. When used for chlorine removal, hypochlorous acid is adsorbed on the carbon surface and decomposed into hydrogen chloride and atomic oxygen. The atomic oxygen and carbon atoms rapidly convert from the adsorbed state to a combined state. Therefore, activated carbon dechlorination does not involve adsorption saturation; it only consumes the carbon mass. Activated carbon is not only used for dechlorination but is also widely used to remove residual suspended solids, humic acid, colloids, heavy metals, odors, and more from water.
The bottom of the activated carbon filter should be filled with a quartz sand support layer, with grain sizes of 8‑16 mm. Granular activated carbon is then packed on top as the filtration layer, typically with a thickness of 800‑1200 mm.
Regeneration of activated carbon is typically carried out using thermal regeneration, where the activated carbon is heated to 500‑1000°C to decompose organic matter on its surface into carbon dioxide and water. Alternatively, high‑pressure steam stripping or soaking in sodium hydroxide solution can also be used for regeneration.
Removal method Adsorption filtration using activated carbon filter media Production method Produced from coal, charcoal, fruit pits, nutshells, etc., through carbonization and activation Application scope Dechlorination; removal of residual suspended solids, humic acid, colloids, heavy metals, odors, etc. Adsorption Characteristics
1. Humic Acid
Humic acid is a common organic substance in natural water. Although it does not pose a major threat to human health, it can react with other organics during disinfection to form harmful chlorinated compounds such as chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Activated carbon can effectively remove humic acid from water, and water pH has little effect on its adsorption characteristics.
2. Organic Chlorides
Activated carbon removes different organic chlorides produced during chlorination with varying efficiency; its removal of carbon tetrachloride is better than that of chloroform.
3. Color
Activated carbon has a good removal effect on color caused by aquatic plants and algae. According to reference data, the removal rate is at least 30%.
4. Hydrocarbon Organics
Activated carbon shows significant adsorption of petroleum products such as hydrocarbons.
5. Heavy Metals
Activated carbon has a strong adsorption capacity for certain heavy metal ions and their compounds, including antimony, hexavalent chromium, tin, silver, mercury, cobalt, zirconium, nickel, titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum. The effectiveness of heavy metal adsorption by activated carbon is highly dependent on their existing forms and the pH of the water.
6. Radioactive Substances
Some groundwater contains radioactive elements such as uranium, thorium, iodine, and cobalt at very low concentrations but with significant potential harm. These can be removed by activated carbon adsorption.
7. Cyanides
If air is introduced into the carbon bed, the carbon acts as a catalyst, oxidizing toxic cyanides into non‑toxic cyanates.
8. Detergents
At a filtration rate of 12 m/h, the removal rate is 90‑100%.

Product Features
- High efficiency – continuous filtration within each operating cycle.
- Low operating and maintenance costs – only requires periodic backwashing.
- Low initial investment.
- Low head loss: with a single‑layer filter media and timely cleaning, the total head loss is ≤0.5 m.
- Stable effluent quality and good filtration performance. Timely cleaning of the filter media ensures high‑quality, consistent water output without periodic quality fluctuations.
- Easy to upgrade and expand: the modular operation allows for flexible addition or removal of filter units based on changes in water flow, making it easy to modify or expand the system.
- Small footprint and attractive appearance: the integrated backwash treatment design saves about 70‑80% of floor space, resulting in a more compact and aesthetically pleasing system.
