Soy product processing wastewater treatment equipment

Size:

Soy products are foods made primarily from soybeans, adzuki beans, mung beans, peas, broad beans, and other legumes through processing. Most soy products are derived from tofu—produced by coagulating soy milk—and its various derivatives. During the production of soy products, substantial amounts of wastewater are generated, originating mainly from washing, soaking, and pressing operations, with additional effluent from rinsing processes. The volume and pollutant concentrations of these wastewaters vary depending on the production process, product type, and operational practices. China’s large-scale tofu production results in significant wastewater discharge, characterized by high concentrations of organic pollutants that severely contaminate water bodies. Wastewater treatment systems for soy‑product processing typically employ anaerobic‑dominant technologies, achieving high COD removal rates while offering simple operation and maintenance and low operating costs.

Soy products are foods made primarily from soybeans, adzuki beans, mung beans, peas, broad beans, and other legumes through processing. Most soy products are derived from tofu—produced by coagulating soy milk—and its various derivatives. During the production of soy products, substantial amounts of wastewater are generated, originating mainly from washing, soaking, and pressing‑filtration processes, with additional effluent from rinsing operations. The volume and pollutant concentrations of these wastewaters vary depending on the production process, product type, and operational practices. China’s large-scale tofu production results in significant wastewater discharge, characterized by high concentrations of organic pollutants that severely contaminate water bodies. Wastewater treatment systems for soy‑product processing typically employ anaerobic‑dominant technologies, achieving high COD removal rates while offering simple operation and low operating costs.

The main treatment processes for wastewater from soybean product processing include UASB anaerobic biological treatment, anaerobic–aerobic combined treatment, and dissolved air flotation.

Soy‑product wastewater is a highly concentrated organic effluent containing proteins, fats, starches, and other organic compounds. It exhibits good biodegradability and is well suited for treatment by biological processes.

      1 Anaerobic process

Anaerobic processes are widely used for treating wastewater from soy‑product processing. Employing a multi‑stage anaerobic biofilter to treat high‑strength organic wastewater from soy‑product manufacturing is both economical and cost‑effective. Practical experience has demonstrated that the multi‑stage anaerobic biofilter outperforms the single‑stage anaerobic biofilter in handling highly concentrated organic effluents, with the CODcr removal efficiency increasing from 78%–80% to over 90%. This approach forms the basis of an integrated multi‑stage anaerobic biofilter–aerobic process suitable for engineering applications.

      2 Aerobic Process

In view of the characteristics of soybean‑product wastewater, the AB activated sludge process can be employed for its treatment. Process trials determined the operational parameters for treating soybean‑product wastewater using the AB activated sludge method. Under optimized operating conditions, the process achieved significant treatment performance, with an overall CODcr removal efficiency of 97%, comprising 89% in the A stage and 83% in the B stage.

      3 Anaerobic–Aerobic Process

The anaerobic–aerobic treatment process leverages the advantages of anaerobic microorganisms—namely their ability to handle high concentrations and heavy loads while recovering useful energy—while also capitalizing on the rapid growth rate and superior effluent quality of aerobic microorganisms.

Scope of application for wastewater treatment equipment in the bean‑product processing industry: wastewater treatment at tofu factories, wastewater treatment in bean‑product manufacturing, wastewater treatment at starch plants, wastewater treatment in potato starch production, wastewater treatment in tofu processing, and wastewater treatment at tofu workshops, among others.
