An air flotation machine is a device that uses small or microbubbles to bring suspended impurities in a liquid to the surface. When water contains fine particulates with densities close to that of water, which are difficult to settle or rise naturally, this air flotation system can be employed.
In wastewater treatment projects, solid–liquid separation is a critical process; for the removal of fine suspended particles with densities close to that of water, dissolved air flotation (DAF) is the most effective method.
The QF‑type dissolved‑air flotation system is a highly efficient, integrated flotation unit developed through the integration of the advantages of various domestic and international flotation technologies. This equipment boasts a compact footprint, low energy consumption, high solid–liquid separation efficiency, and ease of operation and maintenance.
2. Operating Principle
Air flotation primarily serves to separate solids from liquids, removing suspended solids (SS), oil, and color from wastewater while also reducing pollutants such as COD and BOD. It relies on microbubbles generated by the dissolved‑gas system, which collide with and adhere to floc particles in the water, forming “microbubble–floc complexes.” These complexes gradually coalesce, increasing in size and eventually becoming buoyant, resulting in “bubble–floc aggregates” with a specific gravity less than 1.
Under a working pressure of 0.3–0.5 MPa, dissolved‑gas water maximizes the dissolution of air into the water; upon decompression, this releases microbubbles with diameters of approximately 20–30 μm.
Add the flocculants PAC or PAM to the wastewater (PAC at 20–50 mg/L, and PAM at approximately one-tenth the dosage of PAC). After a 5-minute effective flocculation reaction—whose duration, dosage, and flocculation efficiency must be determined experimentally—the mixture proceeds to the contact zone.
Within the contact zone, microbubbles adhere to flocs in the wastewater and rise together into the separation zone. Under the buoyant force of the bubbles, the flocs and bubbles ascend to the liquid surface, forming a scum layer that is scraped by a skimmer into the sludge collection area. The clarified water in the lower layer is discharged through a collection pipe. After treatment, part of the clarified water is recirculated for use in the dissolved‑air system, while the remainder is discharged.
3. Applications of the Dissolved Air Flotation Unit
Dissolved air flotation (DAF) equipment is designed to remove solid suspended particles, oils, and various colloidal substances from a wide range of industrial and municipal wastewaters. This equipment is extensively used in the treatment of industrial effluents and municipal sewage generated by industries such as oil refining, chemical processing, brewing, vegetable oil production and refining, slaughterhouse operations, electroplating, and textile dyeing.
