Water quality analysis
Hospital wastewater is similar in quality to conventional domestic sewage, but it differs in that it contains large quantities of pathogenic microorganisms, parasite eggs, and various viruses—such as Ascaris eggs, hepatitis viruses, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Shigella, and radioactive substances. Therefore, this wastewater must undergo rigorous disinfection to eliminate pathogenic agents and prevent harm to the environment.
Considering the typical characteristics of domestic wastewater, hospital effluent is rich in organic matter and exhibits good biodegradability, making it an easily treatable organic wastewater that is well suited to biochemical treatment processes. On the other hand, given the relatively low CODCr concentration of the influent, a treatment process centered on biological treatment should be adopted.
Process Flow Diagram
Taking into account the characteristics and discharge scale of the wastewater, as well as such comprehensive factors as ease of management, cost-effectiveness, stable compliance with standards, and resource recovery, the selected treatment process should be technologically advanced and mature, capable of adapting to variations in wastewater quality and flow rate, easy to operate and maintain, low in operating costs, and economically efficient in terms of capital investment.
By identifying the sources of wastewater and conducting a comprehensive theoretical analysis of its composition and water quality characteristics, and on this basis integrating experience gained from previous treatment of similar wastewater types while taking into account technical and economic factors such as discharge standards and capital investment, the selected treatment process is “biological contact oxidation (A/O process) plus disinfection.” The specific process flow diagram is shown in the figure.
Process Flow Description
Hospital wastewater is collected in a septic tank, where anaerobic fermentation enhances its biodegradability.
The wastewater from the septic tank, after anaerobic fermentation, flows into the equalization basin, where it is homogenized and its flow rate is stabilized before being pumped to the Grade A anoxic tank. In this biological treatment stage, heterotrophic bacteria hydrolyze soluble organic matter in the wastewater into organic acids, breaking down macromolecular organics into smaller molecules and converting insoluble organics into soluble forms. Additionally, proteins, fats, and other pollutants are ammonified, while the nitrified effluent returned from the secondary sedimentation tank undergoes denitrification to remove ammonia nitrogen from the water.
In the Class O biological tank, aerobic microorganisms and nitrifying bacteria are present; these microorganisms decompose organic matter into CO2 and H2O. Under sufficient oxygen conditions, the nitrification process carried out by nitrifying bacteria oxidizes NH3‑N to NO3‑, which is then returned to the Class A biological tank via recirculation. In the anoxic environment, heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria reduce NO3‑ to molecular nitrogen. The effluent from the contact oxidation tank flows by gravity into the sedimentation tank for solid–liquid separation. After sludge settles, the supernatant from the sedimentation tank is sent to the disinfection tank, and the disinfected wastewater can be discharged in compliance with regulatory standards.
