Underground wastewater treatment equipment is a modular, high-efficiency biological treatment system that relies on biofilms as the primary purification medium. It fully leverages the advantages of biofilm-based reactors such as anaerobic biofilters and contact oxidation beds—namely, high biomass density, strong resistance to organic loading, low energy consumption, stable operation, and ease of maintenance—thereby endowing the system with broad application prospects and significant promotional value.
Working Principle of Underground Wastewater Treatment Equipment
1. The operating principle of an anaerobic biofilter
1) Filtration: The packing material traps and filters out large particulates and suspended solids from the influent.
2) Hydrolysis: Anaerobic microorganisms can hydrolyze large, insoluble macromolecules into small, soluble compounds.
3) Absorption: Anaerobic microorganisms adsorb and assimilate organic pollutants in the water; a portion of these substances is utilized for their own growth and reproduction, while another portion is released as biogas through the U-shaped water seal.
4) Denitrification: The effluent from the contact oxidation bed is recirculated to the anaerobic filter, where denitrifying bacteria can utilize the nitrate nitrogen in the return flow and convert it into nitrogen gas, thereby removing nitrogen compounds from the wastewater.
After treatment in an anaerobic filter, rural wastewater exhibits reduced concentrations of suspended solids, organic pollutants, and nitrogen, thereby decreasing the hydraulic and organic loading on the subsequent contact oxidation bed.
2. Principle of operation of the contact oxidation bed
1) Adsorption: During their growth and reproduction on the packing material, aerobic microorganisms aggregate to form biofilms with a large surface area and high biomass concentration, enabling them to adsorb a substantial portion of organic pollutants from the water and thereby reduce pollutant concentrations.
2) Uptake and degradation: Under continuous aeration, aerobic microorganisms can assimilate adsorbed organic pollutants as nutrients, metabolize them, and use part of the energy for their own growth and reproduction, while converting another portion into carbon dioxide and water.
The contact oxidation bed further reduces the concentration of organic pollutants in rural wastewater, with effluent CODcr and BOD5 removal rates exceeding 80%, thereby meeting the national secondary discharge standard for wastewater.
3. Working Principle of the Sedimentation Tank
1) Gravity is utilized to allow the suspended sludge, which has a specific gravity greater than that of water, to settle to the bottom of the contact oxidation bed, thereby removing it from the effluent and ensuring high effluent quality.
2) The sludge that settles to the bottom is automatically returned to the contact oxidation bed to maintain the sludge concentration in the bed.
4. Disinfection Tank: By using solid chlorine to disinfect the effluent, pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, coliforms, and viruses can be effectively eliminated. The treated water is clear and transparent, odorless, and its bacterial and coliform counts both comply with national wastewater discharge standards.
Features of Underground Wastewater Treatment Equipment
There are various underground wastewater treatment processes; provided that the effluent meets regulatory standards, their most notable advantages include:
1. The equipment is buried underground, allowing for landscaping above and maintaining an aesthetically pleasing environment.
2. The entire equipment generally does not require dedicated personnel for operation and maintenance.
3. It can reduce the land footprint, allowing parking lots and other facilities to be built above the equipment without the need for dedicated factory buildings or ancillary structures.
4. No adverse impact on the surrounding environment, minimal sludge production, and noise levels below the standards for Class II areas.
5. Easy to operate, innovative technology, excellent performance, and long service life.
6. The equipment can be arranged according to standard layouts or customized to suit the terrain.
Under what conditions is it appropriate to use underground wastewater treatment equipment?
The wastewater volume is relatively small, pollutant concentrations are low, the composition is uncomplicated, the site is limited, and aesthetic considerations for the surrounding environment must be taken into account. Under these circumstances, an underground wastewater treatment system is typically recommended.
Applications of Underground Wastewater Treatment Equipment
1. Residential communities, villas, and office buildings
2. Hotels, canteens, and bathhouses
3. Small and medium-sized factories
4. Hospitals and small- to medium-sized medical institutions
5. Train stations, airports, docks, and commercial districts
6. Parks, historical sites, and other tourist attractions
7. Schools, the military, and government institutions
8. Other venues with stringent requirements for space and environment.
