Product Overview
Iron and manganese removal filters, also known as manganese sand filters, are commonly used in groundwater treatment. Iron and manganese often coexist in groundwater, particularly in northern China and in regions rich in iron and manganese ores.
When used as process water in various chemical industries—such as papermaking, textiles, printing and dyeing, and leather finishing—it can severely compromise product quality. High iron concentrations impart an metallic odor to the water, adversely affecting its taste. For potable use, China’s “Hygiene Standard for Drinking Water” (GB 5749‑2006) specifies maximum limits of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.1 mg/L for manganese; raw water exceeding these thresholds must undergo treatment to remove iron and manganese. Prolonged consumption of water with elevated iron and manganese levels can also have serious adverse effects on health.
Principle Overview
Manganese sand filters remove iron and manganese through the principle of contact catalytic oxidation. First, water with excessively high iron and manganese concentrations is aerated to ensure thorough contact and mixing between oxygen and water. Then, leveraging the catalytic action of the filter media, dissolved ferrous iron and divalent manganese are oxidized into insoluble higher-valence iron and manganese compounds. Finally, the filtration and interception capabilities of the manganese sand further eliminate these iron and manganese contaminants.
The air–water ratio during aeration—the ratio of the volume of air to the volume of water involved in the process—significantly affects aeration efficiency. During oxygen‑transfer aeration, because oxygen has very low solubility in water, not all of the oxygen in the supplied air can dissolve. As the air–water ratio increases, oxygen utilization declines rapidly; typically, this ratio is kept below 0.1–0.2. If the aeration process also aims to remove carbon dioxide, the air–water ratio should be no less than 3.Model Description

Product Features

- High efficiency, with continuous filtration within each cycle.
- It has low operation and maintenance costs and requires only periodic backwashing.
- Low upfront investment, inexpensive equipment costs, low operating expenses, and easy management.
- Low head loss: With a single filter media and timely cleaning, the total head loss is ≤0.5 m.
- The effluent quality is stable, and the filtration performance is excellent. Timely cleaning of the filter media ensures high‑quality, consistent effluent, with no periodic fluctuations in water quality.
- Easy to modify and expand: The modular operational approach allows for flexible addition or removal of filters in response to changes in water volume, facilitating easy upgrades and expansions.
- Compact footprint and aesthetically pleasing design: Integrating aeration and backwash water treatment into a single unit, it reduces land use by approximately 70–80% while offering a more attractive, space‑efficient appearance.
- The filter media can be reused multiple times after backwashing, resulting in a long service life; backwashing methods are versatile, including manual, timed, and differential-pressure modes.
Scope of Application
① Used for treating water containing excessive iron and manganese in industries such as food, beverage, papermaking, and brewing.
② Used for iron and manganese removal in groundwater and well water intended for drinking.
③ Used for iron and manganese removal in geothermal projects and swimming pool recirculating water systems;
④ Used as a pretreatment device in ion-exchange softening and desalination systems;
⑤ Used as a coarse filtration device for industrial water supply with low water quality requirements.
